“Push back against the age as hard as it pushes against you.”
– Flannery O’Connor
I was talking to a man in his thirties about how to take action, he’s been locked up in fear. The cost of that fear is what can be achieved. What can be achieved is whatever God has put in front of you to do that has ramifications to something important. As the 19th-century real-estate developer George Adair said, “Everything you ever wanted is on the other side of fear.” I think that’s true. Put it in the context of dealing with the important things of life, especially if God is calling you to it, you will find resistance. Nothing of importance and of significant weight is going to be handed to you without the cost. For many of us, our first stop is through that fear. Maybe it is the fear of failure or the fear of not being good enough. Maybe it’s the fear of succeeding and having your life just radically change from what you’ve known. Maybe the fear of what people will think. We could “maybe” that all day.
Maybe, you’re afraid to read this right now. Maybe, there is something you’re afraid to do that comes right to mind, that you’ve just been pushing away. I’ve got something right now in front of me that I’m afraid of. I’m coaching myself as I write this. Here’s the thing. Jump with me. Do your due diligence and with prudence, jump at it. Put it right in front of you and don’t push that thing away any longer. No longer wait for perfect. No longer wait for a rainy day. No longer wait for someone else to do it. Jump at it.
I’m going to. You go too. “Do not be afraid.”
