“The best way to create your future is to create it.” – Abraham Lincoln
My friend Lindsay recently started a company called Live Victorious, a fruit of the work she’s done creating events for singles in the Buffalo, NY area. She’s done a great job bringing faithful people together for fun and engaging nights designed to develop faithful relationships. She has invited me to lead one of her events that is coming up and put together a talk to encourage singles in this season of life as they continue to search for their spouse. In a very Righteous Co. kind of way, I’ll be leading a hike at Chestnut Ridge and sharing a witness of my journey to find my wife, Ani.
I just reviewed the interior design for the second edition of the book by reading it through again. It’s been some time since I’ve done that and was reminded of my raw entries from dating Ani. Rereading brought me back to that season from a decade ago. This time ten years ago, I was preparing to propose to her – getting the ring secured, ironing out the logistics for our trip, getting intense on my prayer, battling off some doubts… all of which went into the cake. But on May 30th, down in Georgia at an incredible camp in the middle of nowhere and in the chapel just the year before where I made my decision… I popped the question.
Spoiler… she said “yes“.
Then we went to a place called Goats on a Roof, and then Chick-fil-A. (Yes, before Buffalo had one. Yes, it was romantic.)

But here’s the thing, that’s our story.
Everyone has theirs.
(As I write this, it was just announced that there is white smoke from the Vatican. Habemus Papam!)
You have your Vocation. If marriage is in the cards, your story will be unique to you. I increasingly hear from singles that the dating scene is awful. If you’re single now, don’t despair. Lean into it. Be intentional with your dating and formation. Be the best person you can be and allow Jesus into this place. If this is the greatest call in your life, you need to let the One who designed your heart to lead.
Maybe you have some work to do on yourself. Maybe you need patience. Maybe you need to be brave and proactive. Maybe you need to surrender.
Maybe you need to come on this hike;)
But whatever you need to do, let Christ guide. Building your family on the right foundation makes your dreams and doings go farther. If your familial foundation is soft, problems will only magnify in other areas.
So ditch the hook-up apps, get intentional, and come out on a hike on May 17. Check out what Lindsay is doing at Live Victorious and buy a ticket here. I hope to see you on trail!
(By the time I finished writing this over a chaotic day, Pope Leo XIV was elected.)
