The Greatest Miracle

“Because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.” – Zechariah 9:11
I’m writing this on Holy Thursday, the start of the Triduum. It’s game time.
The biggest event in Christendom.
It’s not just a remembrance of the events that took place 1,992 years ago. That would be powerful enough—that’s what we do at Christmas: we remember.
But what we do for this is much different. We celebrate the greatest miracle ever done. The sequence of these events is staggering.
Holy Thursday: the first Mass. Jesus reinforces His teaching earlier in John 6 on the Eucharist by instituting and establishing the way to consume His flesh and drink His blood. It’s wild to even write it. But the truth is, Jesus gave us His flesh as our daily bread.
And not only that—there is only one sacrifice, as the Paschal Lamb. Each Mass connects us in real time to that. It’s not a reenactment. It transcends time and space as Jesus breaks that bread and makes it His Body and Blood.
It’s not only what Christians of all traditions held in high esteem for 1,517 years—it’s how Jesus lays it out in the Gospels.
Good Friday: Jesus dies on the Cross. Our Lord, who was with Creation since before the beginning—the One we call the Word—delivered Holy Scripture in a way to show that His death on the Cross, in that particular time and place, was intentional.
He saw when Abraham brought Isaac to Mt. Moriah to sacrifice him only to have his hand stayed by our Lord, knowing full well that this sacrifice was reserved for later, in this same location, which would become Golgotha. The ram that was used instead? Caught in thorns.
Holy Saturday: The Harrowing of Hell.
The raising of the dead on Earth was only a peek at what was going on in the spiritual realm beyond our eyes. Earth was quiet, but Jesus was busy bringing up the souls who had to wait for the gates of Heaven to open.
As St. Thomas Aquinas wrote in the Summa:
“Christ descended into hell to deliver the just who had gone before Him.” — ST III, Q. 52, Art. 5
And St. Paul to the Ephesians:
“When he ascended on high, he took prisoners captive and gave gifts to men… He also descended into the lower parts of the earth.”— Ephesians 4:8–9
For the first time since the cherubim closed off Eden while Adam and Eve were evicted, Heaven was open for the righteous. The debt had been paid.
But Jesus wasn’t done yet.
Easter Sunday: The Resurrection.
He rose. Coming back from the dead, He showed that the laws of what we thought we knew don’t apply to Him. In fact, He is the Master of it. He makes the rules—and is above them.
Jesus revisited the Apostles and spent another fifty days with them before ascending to Heaven. He promised to send another. The Advocate. The Holy Spirit. The Paraclete.
The Third Person of the Trinity is on the scene—and He blows in big, with fire and wind at Pentecost.
With the will of the Father, the Body and Blood of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit — we’re living the greatest miracle of creation.
Let’s remember: this isn’t a “holiday.”
It’s a call.
Happy Resurrection Day to you and your family!
